Research

The research team conducted 35 user interviews and surveys with Gen-Z and Milenial Social Media users to find the major pain points

Objectives

Topic: Social Media and...

  • Mental Health

  • Desires & Expectations

  • User Behaviors

  • Feature Suggestions

Key Findings

A Desire for:

  • Authenticity and less comparison

  • Positive content that improves emotional states

  • Non-addictive and uplifting content

  • Real connections & reminders to be present and take breaks

Problem Statement

Millennials and Gen-Z are facing a mental health crisis, with a strong desire for social platforms that foster authenticity and connection over comparison and addiction. There is a clear opportunity to develop a new social media application that instead prioritizes positive content and encourages genuine, real-world connections.

User Persona

We created a Gen-Z and Millennial persona to drive our decisions. Our Millennial persona, Erika: a busy, optimistic woman starting fresh in a new place. She values real-life connections and believes her positive mindset drives her success.

Onboarding Redesign

V2 Launch

*Selected key screens shown for clarity

For the final launch, the team decided to use AI generated images with a contrasting overlay for a more dramatic effect that makes the messaging strong.

Design Exploration

I designed a fresh onboarding flow inspired by PayPal’s bold, minimalist style. With light, uplifting colors and imagery, the experience instantly sets a positive, welcoming tone for users.

Onboarding Before

In V1, the brand colors and logo were not fully defined and functionality for the MVP was prioritized over user experience.

Major Improvements

V1

15+ usability issues found from heuristics evaluation and user tests

Not scannable: Wordy text = uncertainty and confusion

High Cognitive load: Asking for too much information

Unclear navigation and illogical steps

Not Accessible per WCAG 2.2

V2 Redesign

Usability fixes, standard icons, use of a design system

Short, engaging, clear copy

Easily and quickly scannable

Only asking for basic info

User picks topics of interest after onboarding

Simplified navigation

Reviewed and fixed accessibility issues

eloomin Website Redesign

eloomin's website was redesigned to include the UX Mindset apprenticeship program. I collaborated with another designer to build a cohesive and informative site for future apprentices and app users.

Tools: Framer & Lovable.dev to ideate, Figma to prototype

The Damage Is Done

Many studies have been done to reveal negative effects of psychological addiction to tech platforms: The Center for Humane Technology (CHT), being one. These patterns encourage addiction and polarization, and amplify negativity and anxiety.

It's Time to Reverse It

How CHT missions align with eloomin

1. Realign tech with human values
2. Reinforce community-based connections & healthier interactions
3. Apply evidence based insights to intentional strategies to uplift rather than harm

Reflection

If we grab our phones first thing in the morning by habit, what better way to start with positivity?

This project was put on pause, but it was an eye-opening experience and made me reflect on what social media does to us long term and the importance of designing products that are ethical and humane. It affects us on a global level so the impact is bigger than we imagined.
